Virginia high school embraces Confederate battle flag

Hurley High is located in Buchanan County, one of Virginia’s poorest.The front doors to Hurley High are painted as a Confederate battle flag the first of many versions of the flag on campus.Rebel Man, with a rebel flag, adorns center court in the gym at Hurley High.Smiley Ratliff Field is named for the school's first football coach. “Smiley often said his assistant coaches were Genghis Khan, Napoleon and Robert E. Lee.” says Sam Varney, who played on the original teams.The Hurley High football team practices on its unique field, "The Rock," which was built after rock was blasted out of a mountain to make room.High above the football stadium is a faded version of the Confederate battle flag that was long ago painted into the rock.
